Pearl Grey in detail
Built for outside
The reason this stone is listed in 30 mm and 40 mm rather than the 18 mm and 20 mm of the countertop varieties is that external paving carries point loads. Thinner material bedded on sand will crack under a vehicle wheel or a heavy planter however good its finish, so thickness here is specified against the load rather than the look.
Light greys also matter outdoors for a reason that has nothing to do with appearance. A dark paving stone in direct sun becomes too hot to walk on barefoot, which is why pool surrounds are almost always specified in a light stone.
Slip resistance and finish
Flamed lightens the stone considerably and leaves a coarse, open surface. Bush-hammered is more heavily pitted and gives the highest slip resistance of the finishes we run, which makes it the usual choice for a ramp, a wet step or a pool edge. Both hold dirt more than a polished face, so cleaning belongs in the specification for a plaza.
If the project carries a published slip-resistance requirement, send it with the enquiry. The finish has to be chosen against that number rather than the other way round.
What to specify when you order
- Area in square metres, and the laying pattern
- Thickness, and the load the paving has to take
- Finish, and any published slip-resistance requirement
- Edge detail for steps, pool copings and ramps
- Packing and crate weights, since external paving runs heavy
